With the increasing trend of living outdoors, a commercial awning can provide a covered alfresco extension to bars, restaurants and cafes.  And in the age of non smoking, of course to provide shelter for the die hard addicts.

Awnings can also be used as shop front canopies, providing cover over on-street merchandise, or just as a decorative advertising canopy.

Perhaps less well known, but increasingly important is the use of canopies to provide shade to office & workplace windows.  These can have sensors fitted to automatically extend when the sun shines, protecting workers from sun glare and consequent eye strain.
